Credit score Repair Expert services and Their Advantages

We all know that credit is important, but what should we do if we are in need of credit repair? I know if were to find that my credit was in trouble, I would want to solve the problem myself rather than pay someone to do it. Credit repair is a serious thing since your credit determines so much of your life in todays world. Credit can effect your ability to buy a home, rent an apartment, buy a car, or even finance your new washer and dryer. That is why you should take credit repair very seriously. There are some steps you can take to help yourself by fixing your credit problems yourself.

The first thing you will need to do is find out if you even need credit repair. To do that you will need to get your hands on a copy of your credit report. That should not be difficult, since the government mandates that you are allowed to obtain one free copy of your credit report annually. You just have to ask the right people. You can either check out the website for the Federal Trade Commission or contact one of the major credit agencies directly. When you do, though, remember that it should be free and you should only have to supply your name, address, and social security number to get it.

Next, you will want to look over your copy of the report carefully. One of the easiest ways you can perform credit repair for yourself is to spot any incorrect information on your report. All of the agencies have ways you can go about making corrections to your credit report. Even if the information is just partially incorrect, you should take the time to get the credit repair made. Also, if something just doesnt look right to you, ask the credit agency to give you the name and number of the institution that gave the report that you are not sure about. There is a chance you can work whatever it is out with the company, which can help with your credit repair even more.

Once you are familiar with the credit repair process for incorrect information, assemble what you need. Then, send it in to the agency to make sure they make the necessary changes and repairs to your credit report. Before you do, though, be sure to make copies for yourself. If the information is lost in the mail or even misplaced by the company before the credit repair is made, you will be able to easily make another copy and get it to them quickly. It is always a good thing to keep copies of everything so that you can track the progress of your credit repair.

If you keep getting rejected for loans or credit that you believe you should be able to obtain, it is a good idea to find out why. With the law allowing you one copy of your report a year for free, there is no reason you cant make at least the easy credit repairs. When you obtain your copy of your credit report, you may be amazed at the incorrect or inaccurate information on there, and at how easy it is to get those inaccuracies corrected. Take the time and put in a little effort and you can do some serious credit repair without having to pay someone to do it for you.

Signs Indicating Credit Repair

Erase Bad Debt !
Remove Negative Items From Your Credit Report

Youve probably seen these headlines and others just like it promising to clean up or fix bad credit. For someone who suffers from a bad or poor credit rating, these headlines are certainly an appealing offer.

Imagine finally being able to buy that new car, get debt collectors off your back, and enjoy a new found freedom from your past debts.

Sound to good to be true ? It probably is. Once you fall prey to the credit repair offer and pay the hefty fees involved to clean up your record, heres what happens:

1) The credit repair scam artist contacts the credit bureaus and reports that the negative information in your file is false.

2) The credit bureau removes this negative information from your report while they investigate the claim.

3) The scam artist will then show you the cleaned up version of your credit report and ta-da your credit history has been fixed !

But heres what the scammer doesnt tell or show you. After the credit bureau completes their investigation the negative information is placed back on your credit report.

Negative but accurate information cannot be removed from your credit profile. Only incorrect information can be removed.

Accurate information remains on your credit file for a period of 7 years from the time it is reported to the credit agencies; a bankruptcy appears for a 10 year period.

Many legitimate companies exist that can help you with your debt problems. But how do you spot a scam offer ? Easy, theyll ask you for their fees up front. By law, credit repair agencies cannot ask for payment until theyve provided the service they promised.

Additionally many states require that a credit repair service, whether they are for-profit or not-for-profit, must provide you with a detailed written contract, an explanation of your legal rights, and the opportunity to cancel any signed contract within 3 days.

Also, be aware that a credit repair offer could be an attempt to steal your identity by getting you to provide personal information such as a Social Security number, bank account and credit card account numbers.

Always make sure you know who you are dealing with before accepting any offer to help you repair your credit. Those who dont can have their credit ruined further and create more debt problems.

Fixing Your Credit Record In a Legal Manner

If youve done any searching on the Internet for information pertaining to Credit Repair, youve no doubt found that theres a great deal available. Unfortunately, theres also a lot of misinformation as well.

Lets take a look at some of the most common misstatements youll come across and examine them in detail.

MYTH #1
Credit repair doesnt work!

While its true that credit repair is more art than science thats not to say it doesnt work. If you undertake to repair your bad credit score, theres never any guarantee you can restore it to perfect status. But sometimes you can, and in almost every case you can at least affect some improvement in your credit score, and often major improvement at that!

First of all, credit reports for the most part are filled with errors. While there seems to be no general agreement, its estimated that anywhere from 1/3 (Attorney General of NY) to as many as 90% (Charles Givens Organization) of credit reports contain errors.

Removal of erroneous negative information alone will go a great way toward improving your credit score. But theres more to the story, which brings us to myth #2.

MYTH #2
Negative information that can be verified cannot be removed

This is one of those statements that are almost true, but taken literally is misleading. As is often the case, the inclusion (or exclusion) of one seemingly small word makes the difference in a truthful statement, and one thats not (or not necessarily) accurate.

Lets take an analogy. Suppose its the middle of summer, and your grass has grown unusually high. Lets also suppose that you own a lawn mower, its in good working condition, and has plenty of gasoline in the tank.

Now lets say that youre sitting on your couch and say to yourself My grass will get cut today because I CAN go outdoors anytime and cut it.

So will your grass get cut? Not necessarily! Just because you can go outdoors and cut your grass doesnt mean its going to get done. You can repeat this statement to yourself all day long, but your grass isnt going to get cut until you actually go outside and DO it!

Likewise, because a negative item on your credit report can be verified doesnt mean it will be. According to the Fair Credit Reporting Act, a credit bureau must investigate and verify within a reasonable period of time any item in your credit report that you dispute. If the information is found to be inaccurate or can no longer be verified, the consumer reporting agency shall promptly delete such information.

Now in this context can be verified clearly means verified by the credit bureaus investigation of the item, and the reasonable period of time has been established (by subsequent rulings) to be 30 days. So if the credit bureau doesnt complete its investigation of the disputed information within 30 days, or if for some reason the creditor fails to respond and verify the information, by law the disputed data must be deleted from your credit file.

MYTH #3
Credit repair agencies are all scams

Its true that there ARE a good many unscrupulous credit repair agencies. But there are also some corrupt police officers, lawyers, and politicians. Yet we dont label all members of these professions as corrupt.

If youre looking for help to repair your bad credit you do need to be careful and do your homework when selecting an agency. There are many honest credit repair companies that are not scams. But beware of any who make promises as to results!

As stated above, its not always possible to restore your bad credit history to perfect status, and no one should be making any promises to that effect. Beware of any company that does! And while an agency will in all likelihood be able to improve your credit score, if any agency makes this promise, be sure its accompanied by a money back guarantee. Otherwise, look elsewhere. And dont forget to ask for references and follow up on them.

MYTH #4
You have to hire a credit repair agency or lawyer to fix your credit

Going back to the analogy above, you can always hire someone else to cut your grass (or to do just about anything else) for your. And if fixing your own credit seems an intimidating task, you might prefer to hire a credit repair company to do it.

But its not really necessary that you do. First of all, credit repair agencies arent cheap. You can expect to pay anywhere from $2,500 to $5,000 or more. Plus, youll be paying a high fee for something you can just as well do for yourself, which brings us to myth #5.

MYTH #5
Its too difficult or complicated to fix your own credit

A credit repair company isnt going to do anything for you that you cant do for yourself! Credit repair isnt rocket science. It involves writing letters to credit bureaus and to creditors. If youre able to write a letter, put a stamp on it and mail it, youre able to repair your own credit.

Given the proper knowledge, you can fix your own credit

This statement IS true! Youre entirely able to repair your own credit, given the proper knowledge. And given the proper knowledge, you can fix your own car, repair your own plumbing, or for that matter perform brain surgery.

While fixing your own credit is relatively simple and straightforward, you do have to know how to go about it. Essentially it involves getting a copy of your credit report and writing letters to the 3 major credit bureaus disputing negative information in your file.

But theres a right way and a wrong way to do it. In fact even some of the high priced credit repair agencies get it wrong, which brings us to myth #6.

MYTH #6
You improve your credit score by getting all the negative items on your credit report removed

Its possible to get all the negative items on your credit report removed and actually see you credit score go DOWN as a result! The reason? Your credit score depends on a number of factors, one of which is the length of your credit history. In some cases, youre better off to NOT remove some negative items on your report, especially if they involve a few late payments in the distant past, but show timely payments during recent years.

While the nuts and bolts of credit repair is beyond the scope of this report, there are a number of sources of good information online. If you have bad credit, there are 3 major points you should keep in mind:

1. If you have a bad credit history, it can (and probably will) cost you many tens of thousands of dollars in higher loan interest over the years, as youll be charged much higher rates than you would be with good credit. If your credit is really bad, you may not be able to get a loan at all!

2. The situation isnt hopeless! In almost every case you CAN improve your credit score. You can easily do it yourself or find a reputable agency to do it for you. But in any case, GET IT DONE!

3. If you choose to repair your own credit (recommended) there are good books and eBooks available that can walk through the process. Get hold of one and get started NOW!

Steps to Bad Credit Repair

In recent years, more people than ever before have found themselves deeply in debt with no remedy in sight. For many of those people, filing bankruptcy seems the only answer. In the majority of cases, however, this is not the case. With some careful planning, skilled help and patience, people can repair their credit.

The first step toward repairing credit is to find out exactly what is owed and to whom. Current copies of credit reports should be obtained from all the major credit bureaus. Free copies of these reports are available if credit has been denied recently, usually within thirty to sixty days. If any inaccurate information is shown on any of the reports, this information should be disputed. This action may be initiated by telephone but it is better to do this in writing for documentation. Credit bureaus must investigate disputes promptly, normally within thirty days. If this time passes and no correspondence or other communication is received, the credit bureau should be contacted again, both by telephone and in writing.

Often credit bureaus will update files and not notify the individual. If this has happened, request a copy of the updated report. Credit bureaus usually furnish free updated copies. Be persistent until the inaccurate information is removed. It may have a great bearing on future creditworthiness.

After incorrect information has been removed, repeat the process with each credit bureau that carries the inaccurate information. This is necessary since the credit bureaus operate independently and changing records with one will have no bearing on the files at another bureau.

Here are some of the most disputed credit report items:

—outdated information, usually over seven years old
—inaccurate personal information
—credit information that belongs to someone else (This is quite common.)

If a large number of credit inquiries appear in the file, request that the credit bureau merge multiple inquiries from the same source. This will help future credit ratings since an excessive number of inquiries is seen as derogatory.

Always keep credit information current by obtaining copies of credit records at least once yearly after resolving problems. This will also act as an alert to any credit fraud that may be occurring.

After obtaining a credit file and starting the dispute process, evaluate your financial situation. If you find that you are unable to make at least the minimum payment on outstanding accounts, immediately contact creditors. Many will appreciate your willingness to pay and will attempt to help set up plans for payment. Do not make promises which cannot be kept. A small payment is preferable to a large payment that never arrives. Sometimes this contact can be enough to reduce payments and forestall more severe measures. If not, a more serious step must be taken.

This next step is to consult a credit-counseling agency. These organizations are invaluable in solving financial problems. They are staffed with trained individuals experienced in the credit field. Do not confuse these agencies with the commercial “credit repair” companies who claim that, for a fee, they will wipe your credit slate clean. Don’t be fooled. There is no legal way to do this. Any procedures they might use are available to you free of charge.

A counselor at a credit counseling agency will take all the information concerning your financial situation, evaluate it and decide the best strategy to use in solving your problem. You will be asked to abide by certain rules while receiving services. These rules may include closing charge accounts and canceling credit cards or paying your bills through the agency. It is to your advantage to abide by the rules, as these agencies are perfectly safe. They are non-profit and will not ask you to pay for their services. Although the repayment period may be long, do not accept offers of credit while receiving services from these organizations since this will only delay the process and could possibly result in you being refused further services.

Here are some suggestions for maintaining good credit after the credit repair period is over:

—Live within your means. Do not return to the bad financial habits that resulted in credit problems the first time.

—Create a budget. Know where all your money is going. Small purchases can add up and make it difficult to meet important obligations. Keep records of all money spent for one month. This detailed record will show where spending cuts need to be made. It will also alert you to any spending problems.

—Plan for financial emergencies by depositing a fixed amount of income to a special “emergency” account. Do this as if paying another monthly bill. This money will insure that emergencies such as illness or loss of job do not catch you totally unprepared. Try to accumulate enough in the fund to pay bills for at least six months.
